Como Villa Work Truck - '1923 Dodge'

Walk back 150 years into this museum of Central Otago history and medal winning Pinot Noir.

Specialising in high quality wines situated only 3kms from Alexandra on Earnslcleugh Road. Como Villa has a unique historical value due to it having a vineyard before the turn of the century.

Our wine tasting venue is a restored house built in 1865, so our wine tasters walk back in time, over 130 years. Seeing is believing....

Como Villa, a museum of old arterfacts found on the property or purchased to suit real old times. We are open to the public or by invitation and we specialise in excellent Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, Reisling, Savignon Blanc and Rosé wines.

About Us

Edmund W Jones, during the mid-1860's, built this substantial stone house. Jones made his money from building water races and selling the water to miners. He owned interests in at least 12 water races. He also owned Grange Farm of 50 acres, which was about a half a mile from Como Villa and ran down Conroy's Creek to the Fraser. Grange Farm had a two-roomed stone house on it.

Jones died in 1868 and Como Villa and Grange Farm were taken over by C Goltz who had been a partner of Jones in various mining ventures. When the properties were put up for sale in 1874, Como Villa was described as a six-roomed stone house with stable and dairy. There were 60 acres of first class land and good grass, 100 trees and a vineyard. In 1874, Como Villa was sold to Ayling of Gorge Creek for £150.

Sometime in the 1880's, Como Villa was acquired by Joseph Roberts, a miner who had worked all his life in Poverty Beach (that is the beach between the mouth of Chapman's Gully and the Fraser).

Como Villa has now been restored by Johnny and Pam Chapman. Windows and walls have been repaired and the setting is 'Walk Back In Time'.
